- Expands creative freedom of your SKATER Mini Dolly

The SKATER Scope is the first truly compact periscope lens system providing all the creative freedom you want.

As it is considerably shorter in its overall length than comparable systems, with clear operating controls, the SKATER Scope makes it possible to work quickly and intuitively. The length is still suf- ficient in critical light situations, to avoid an interfering cast of shadows from the camera body.

The movable tilt module can be adjusted from -105° to +105° and engaged in any desired 2.5° increment. The SKATER Scope can be used as a straight version (borescope) and as a bent version (periscope) with any desired angle. The lateral offset between the tilt module and the main snorkel body is only 50 mm. The whole lens block can be pivoted into any desired angle and fixed with a pivot lock ring. A detailed scale shows the precise angle of pivoting.

With an aperture of T 5.6, the SKATER Scope is an ideal compromise between size and light transmission and is still faster than comparable systems of similar complexity. The calculated aperture is 4 1/3, the light loss 2/3 of a stop.

The SKATER Scope is another sample of the well-known high quality products by P+S Technik. The whole optical arrangement was newly calculated for the Super 35 format and the pupil position of most current lenses such as Arri/Zeiss Ultra Primes, Zeiss HS T1.3 and most Cooke S4 lenses. The excellent image quality and an extreme flat field with minimized vignetting is ensured even in the low aperture range.

Via a separate Image Rotation Ring the image can be rotated 360° around the optical axis (even several times) without restriction. This feature is also used to level the horizon or to achieve “dutched” camera angles without altering the position of the camera. A 0.8 module gear makes it possible to control the image rotation with standard lens control systems. By means of a macro adjustment ring the close focus can be extended to macro.

The SKATER Scope is ideal to complement the SKATER Mini Camera Dolly. Lens height and tilt angle can be adjusted quickly to almost any position.
You can fix a lens right above a surface or adjust the lens height according to an object with great precision. Even with an extremely low lens position it is still possible to obtain views from below.

Due to the compact and short design of the SKATER Scope, it is much easier to work with it in connection with a SKATER Mini Camera Dolly compared to conventional snorkel lens systems.

The 50mm lateral offset of the tilt module can be easily compensated with the Rotation Calculator. The macro adjustment ring allows to even use standard lenses in macro shots.

Support brackets with 15mm or 19mm rods can be attached to the tilt element laterally or at the top. These brackets are part of the SKATER Scope accessories and allow to attach standard lens control motors. The main snorkel body is supported by a standard support bridge. For the ARRI 235 a shorter support block is optionally available so that the SKATER Scope is compatible with the laterally at-tached optional support system of this camera. In this case the SKATER Scope is inserted into the PL mount with a 90° offset.

Various Mounts, SD/HD Version

The SKATER Scope is available with PL or Panavision camera mount. The current lens mounts are PL, Panavision and Nikon. The exchange of camera or lens mounts can be carried out by a technician in the rental house. For video applications in HD or SD a set of B4 mounts (camera and lens mount) can be ordered. A PL to B4 video version will be coming soon.

To work with MF-Nikon lenses change to the Nikon lens mount. If small lenses are required in limited space, this is a high quality and cost effective solution. Geared focus rings to attach lens control motors are offered by P+S Technik.

SKATER Scope on location

The compact and short design and the good light transmission makes the SKATER Scope a flexible applicable snorkel lens system beyond table top and macro shots. For setups in limited space, for example inside vehicles, a maximum distance between the lens and the actor can be obtained. Extremely low camera positions can now be executed without the need of a low angle prism.

The SKATER Scope is also helpful for setups involving critical light situations in which the largest possible leeway for lighting around the lens is required. Image rotations are possible without restriction with a focus control, for example to give crane or car shots greater dynamics by adding some roll movement to the shot.

Ideal snorkel system for motion control

For motion control, the SKATER Scope is an ideal solution due to the fully adjustable tilt module. The SKATER Scope can be individually adapted to the requirements of a specific motion control move.
The small 50mm lateral offset of the tilt module can be electronically compensated, so that operating with a lens nodal does not present a problem. Due to it‘s compact design the actual path of a camera head when panning or tilting around lens nodal is much shorter. Dynamic limits of the rig are not as easily reached, and also the snorkel in itself is less prone to vibrations. The image rotation can be controlled as an additional axis by a focus motor to add rolling (flight) movements without any need of a bulky mechanical roll axis.
